Department OverviewMotorola Solutions is looking for a dynamic Engineering Director responsible for developing and maintaining a big-picture vision and roadmap that supports the Company’s strategic goals for MSI’s P25 Infrastructure products targeted at the public safety market. This role can expect to play an active role in the development of current and future products meeting the demands of our product roadmaps. You will be responsible for the completion of projects, reporting to upper management, planning and monitoring work schedules and cash flows, and working with multiple and diverse teams in multiple locations. Must possess a blend of technical and business skills, and have an interest in and knowledge of emerging engineering practices, including cloud development and deployment. Knowledge of the P25 industry and customer space is very important. Must enjoy spending time in the market to understand the customers’ needs, and be able to provide direction and priorities to development engineering teams. This team has end-to-end ownership of the product definition, planning, delivery and sunset of the entire product portfolio.
The P25 engineering team is responsible for delivering mission critical communications to first responders around the globe. This position will be responsible for providing support and leadership to the engineering and infrastructure teams for both on-premise and cloud solutions, and a variety of appliance software. The ideal candidate will bring their passion, leadership skills, and technical depth to maintain a very healthy legacy product line while building world-class next generation products.
The individual will be accountable for driving the following behaviors:
Lead ~150+ person engineering team
Adept at partnering closely with, and acting as a trusted advisor to, stakeholders across the company to influence strategic priorities.
Possess strong analytical capabilities, be organized, systematic, and be able to manage multiple topics at the same time.
Manage and develop geo-distributed teams, growing teams' competencies, and performance against company targets
Create a culture of collaboration and strong technical ownership to improve our products and services' efficiency, scalability, stability, and security.
Ensure close alignment between Engineering, Product Management, and User Experience.
Providing technical guidance to engineering teams and top management.
Supporting established organizational objectives by developing goals and strategies.
Presenting budgets and plans.
Finding and implementing ways to improve cost-efficiency.
Dismissing and hiring new staff.
First-hand experience building, delivering, operating, and supporting complex software and infrastructure at scale with 99.99+% SLAs.
Experience leading product-centric development teams with a high degree of customer focus.
Experience leading teams responsible for deploying and supporting their own systems in critical, large-scale production environments.
Experience using data and metrics to measure and actively drive improvement in team and process performance.
Additional Desired Qualifications
Technical background in developing and maintaining modern cloud applications, including best practices in development, design, CI/CD, and proactive monitoring.
Experience in managing agile development organizations
Familiarity with P25 or other Mission Critical communications standards
Familiarity with the development of highly reliable on-premise based devices.
Experience with the development and execution of product-focused security programs.
Masters' degree or MBA
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other IT/Engineering fields.
10+ years managing and leading highly productive cross-functional engineering teams.
