Capital One’s Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is an industry specialized group that supports asset managers and originators of commercial and consumer loans. The group has over $14 billion in commitments collateralized by middle market leveraged loans, ABL, SBA loans, commercial equipment leases, subprime auto loans, consumer installment loans, timeshares, residential mortgages, tax liens, and capital call commitments.

FIG has a need for Director level Underwriter to join its Lender Finance / Securitization team. The incumbent will provide underwriting and credit management leadership to cross-functional deal teams in underwriting commercial lender finance transactions, with a particular focus on Leveraged Credit. This includes, but is not limited to, transaction due diligence, collateral analysis, structuring, cash flow modeling, negotiation, approval memo drafting and presentation, legal documentation, and closing. The individual will primarily underwrite new transactions, as well as assist in the restructuring of existing transactions, and consult with team members to manage and monitor portfolio accounts.

The Underwriting and Portfolio Management organization is responsible for working with internal partners to underwrite new transactions and manage the existing portfolio of loans. Our Underwriters and Portfolio Managers balance supporting the Commercial’s Bank’s growth and ensuring we have a scalable, well-managed business.

Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plays a key role completing and presenting pre-screen memos, credit approval memos, collateral analysis, cash flow modeling, and risk rating assessment for recourse and non-recourse loans to non-bank financial institutions.
  • Leads the underwriting and documenting process for structured loan transactions, including: industry research, company research, identification of a borrower’s performance drivers, corporate diligence & financial analysis, projection of future corporate & asset performance, ability to repay debt, as well as assessment of how stress cases impact the credit.
  • Prepares risk assessments and presents senior management with a clear and consistent approach to mitigate credit, legal, regulatory, and other relevant risks, as well as policy compliance.
  • Partner with FIG’s Structuring team in the development and utilization of financial models to perform sensitivity analysis around key economic drivers.
  • Maintain all operational aspects of a transaction from deal initiation to close.
  • Negotiates terms and conditions for transactions and works with cross-functional teams to ensure appropriate documentation.
  • Manages accounts to ensure customer retention and performance to specifications.
  • Coaches and develops junior team members.
  • Partners with Relationship Managers and Portfolio Managers to cultivate excellent client relationships and credit risk management. Exhibits a sense of urgency towards meeting client requests while also meeting acceptable risk parameters.
  • Understands and promotes bank and capital markets products to assist the Relationship Managers in meeting profitability targets.
  • Ensures compliance in credit policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate risk/return dynamics for proposed transactions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Military Experience
  • Experience with financing portfolios of leveraged credit and other corporate debt products.
  • At least 10 years of experience in underwiring and portfolio management focused on lender finance, structured finance, securitization, commercial banking and/or rating agency analysis.
  • Capital markets knowledge with CLO/ABS experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree and/or CFA.
  • Strong credit training and experience.
  • Strong partnership and teamworking orientation.
  • 10+ years of experience with financial products available to financial institutions, including cash flow lending, bond issuance, secured recourse lending, non-recourse lending (i.e. securitization), mezzanine credit, FX and interest rate hedging, etc.
  • 10+ years of experience in preparing financial information, interpreting financial performance, and assessing risk exposure.
  • Strong executive presence and communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset.
