Job Description

This is a unique role in Data Science where you will have the ability and resources to construct and conduct experiments for detection of poorly documented mortgages where the performance of your algorithms will be known. Reliance on hypothesis testing and robust sampling techniques is necessary to ensure that you are leveraging scarce reviewer resources appropriately.

The Loan Quality Center is a team of underwriters and appraisers who conduct post-loan delivery review of loan compliance with Fannie Mae’s Selling Guide. The analytic team supporting the Loan Quality Center’s portfolio includes workforce analytics looking at opportunities to automate or streamline manual tasks in the forensic underwriting process, in addition to ownership of many of Fannie Mae’s sampling models which determine which of our loans are selected for a forensic review, and some reporting responsibilities.

The Single Family - Data Science - Senior Manager role will offer you the flexibility to make each day your own, while working alongside people who care about our mission. You will lead product and project direction utilizing the team's skills in econometric, data mining, and data analysis methods, large or complex data processing techniques and approaches, and computational programing capabilities, as well as problem-solving and communication skills. As the senior manager, you will manage coordination across your team, business partners in the Loan Quality Center, and other support teams at Fannie Mae for data and application building or hosting. You also deliver on the following responsibilities:

  • Ensure the coordination of team activities with product and/or business owners, data engineers, and platform teams to understand business needs and current capabilities, data availability, and alternative uses to drive success of multiple projects, programs, or products.
  • Ensure application of statistical modeling capabilities from disciplines, such as computer science, computational science and methods, statistics, econometrics, data optimization, and data visualization.
  • Identify barriers and opportunities to build the team's predictive analytic capabilities to enhance the delivery of business applications, and support the integration of data and statistical models or algorithms. Adapt industry practices in research and testing to product development, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Oversee the design and build of new modeling applications to support risk measurement, financial valuation, decision making, and business performance for multiple products or initiatives within the Loan Quality Center.
  • Ensure the team communicates complex ideas and solutions effectively to business partners through data visualizations, technical documentation, and non-technical presentation materials.



Minimum Required Experiences

  • 6 or more years of experience as a Data Scientist or Data Science-proximate role, with progressive growth in responsibilities with at least 2 or more years of experience as a people manager


  • Determining causes of operating errors and taking corrective action
  • Experience gathering accurate information to explain concepts and answer critical questions
  • The group of skills related to Influencing including negotiating, persuading others, facilitating meetings, and resolving conflict
  • Skilled in the graphical representation of information in the form of a charts, diagrams, pictures, and dashboards with programs and tools such as Excel, Tableau, or similar data visualization tools
  • The group of skills related to Communication including communicating in writing or verbally, copywriting, planning and distributing communication, etc.
  • Skilled in presenting information and/or ideas to an audience in a way that is engaging and easy to understand
  • The group of skills related to Product Development including designing products, developing product roadmaps, translating design requirements, prototyping, etc.
  • Experience in the process of analyzing data to identify trends or relationships to inform conclusions about the data


  • Collective capabilities for leadership, including leading teams, giving feedback, facilitating meetings, and coaching and mentoring
  • Experience helping an organization to plan and manage change in effort to meet strategic objectives
  • Adept at managing project plans, resources, and people to ensure successful project completion

  • Expertise in using statistical methods, including: developing and testing hypotheses, experimental design, and implementation of econometric methods (such as linear and logistic regressions)
  • The group of skills related to Programming including coding, debugging, and using relevant programming languages (R and SAS are most commonly used in the team)
  • Expertise in using statistical methods, including: developing and testing hypotheses, experimental design, and implementation of econometric methods (such as linear and logistic regressions)
  • Use of SQL and relevant software such as MySQL, Hadoop, or MongoDB to analyze, extract, or transform data

Desired Experiences

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • A Masters degree or equivalent in Data Science, Applied Economics, Statistics, or other similar graduate studies.
  • Familiarity with advanced techniques including machine learning and natural language processing (NLP)
  • Experience defining and managing changes to documents, code, computer programs, websites, and other files to enable collaboration and ensure teams are working from the latest version
