Job Description

At The New York Times, we use data to make better business decisions, improve the quality of our journalism, and provide the best possible experience to our readers. To enable this, we have built and continue to evolve our data platform. As we grow our analytics and data science capabilities, we need to grow and improve our platform to support new challenges and opportunities.

The Data Pipelines Infrastructure team, as the name suggests, builds the platform around data ingestion and processing, for both batch and streaming use cases. Our mission is to maximize the productivity and effectiveness of teams building and consuming data products. This platform empowers everything from ML-based products to important reports and dashboards, and we must meet an extremely high bar for security, privacy, and reliability.

As an engineer on the team, you will:

  • Build new functionalities end-to-end, making sure the solution aligns with our technical strategy and generates the desired outcomes

  • Partner with other teams to help them build solutions using our data platform while actively collecting feedback on areas of improvement

  • Help foster an inclusive and collaborative environment that promotes psychological safety for all team members

  • Help recruit extraordinary engineering talent and help them grow technically

  • Work with product owners, project managers, and other engineers to plan and execute work

  • Advocate for quality and short feedback cycles by leveraging continuous integration, automated build and release processes, and structured development workflow

You may be a good fit if:

  • You have worked on teams that successfully delivered and operated self-service data platforms; bonus if you've done this in the open-source, batch/streaming data infrastructure domain

  • You have a complete experience with the software development lifecycle, building systems, and taking ownership and supporting solutions

  • You have experience with Python and agile engineering practices– like test automation, continuous integration/delivery

  • You have experience with distributed systems and event-driven architectures

  • You know the different storage mechanisms, like relational, columnar, and key-value stores

  • You have a product mindset (outcomes over output)

  • You have passion for the Times' mission and desire to join us at the moment in history where our data has the power to transform every aspect of the creation and practice of journalism

Bonus points if you have experience with:

  • Modern data stack tools such as:

    • dbt

    • Airflow

    • BigQuery

    • Kafka and/or PubSub

    • Google’s Cloud Dataflow (running Apache Beam)

    • Fivetran

  • SQL and data modeling

  • Systems observability using Datadog

  • Infrastructure as code using Terraform

  • Cloud-based architecture (more GCP, but also some AWS)

  • Agile/lean projects

This role is open to full-time remote and NYC based in-office employees.
