Redmond, Washington, United States

As a NTI Design Engineer at Meta RL ARHW, you will create zero-to-one designs to inform the product development for AR Hardware, including integrating new technologies (NTIs) including display, optics, materials, mechanical and electrical engineering innovations for Augmented Reality (AR) platforms. You will advance the development of product vehicles from concept to validation against specifications, requirements and KPI’s through targeted studies and experimentation vehicles, advanced technology development and novel advance design exploration. You will lead system level NTI verification and analysis. As an expert in design risk mitigation you will identify areas of study that require experimentation including custom fixture requirements for proof of concept validation of said NTI’s. Your work will often be the first time that new technologies are integrated, and will inform the roadmap as well as technology tradeoffs.

Required SkillsNTI Design Engineer Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with product design and test partners you will design and validate early prototypes on the design path of next-generation AR hardware devices
  • Designing NTI systems to prove out potential product paths at system and subsystem level and solving problems that your designs uncover (defects, FA etc.)
  • Scoping and leading technical development of workstreams for capabilities needed for current and future NTI investigations and design. Define and execute Engineering Qualification Vehicles and Platforms (EQVs) goals
  • Prioritization of investigation areas for NTI work in the AR Glasses space. Leading and managing integration NTI DOEs to determine design/process sensitivities
  • Leads and informs on problem solving, root cause analysis, and other continuous improvement initiatives
  • Communication across all levels of an organization – from management and higher-level strategy planning to the technicians and leads
Minumum QualificationMinimum Qualifications:
  • Experience designing wearable products with sensors and or optical/mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Optics, Material Science or equivalent experience
  • Background in failure and root cause analysis
  • Experience processing best practices including Scientific Process Development (SPD), Window studies (DOE), rapid prototyping, risk assessment (e.g. FMEA, Pugh Matrix) Knowledge in component design, development, and optimization
  • Background in interconnect design, FPCA/PCBA design, EE and ME component and material selection and system integration
  • Experience in consumer product in electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical interactions (materials, enclosures, displays, thermal solutions, cables/FPCs, connectors)
  • Experience with electro-mechanical design and related assembly process including complex small-scale mechanical assemblies to determine proof of concept
  • 5+ years direct industry experience in creation of consumer products and proof-of-concept vehicles, especially where new technologies are being introduced
Preferred QualificationPreferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with fixture & equipment development, injection molding, adhesives, composites and complex mechanisms
  • Experience with statistical analysis, including usage of tools such as JMP and Minitab
  • Understanding of emerging technologies in additive manufacturing
  • Understanding of metrology methods and design for verification best practices
  • Experience with optical alignment tools and methods
  • Experience with structure problem solving approaches, design experimentation and optimization (DOE), root cause and defect/failure analysis, FMEA, FEA, reliability testing, statistical data analysis, manufacturing process knowledge (MSA/GRR)
  • Working knowledge of mechanical simulation methods including FEA thermal, structural, flow (Moldflow, Moldex3D or equivalent)
  • Experience with 3D design tools and other CAD suites
  • Experience with mechanical tolerance analysis and tools such as CETOL and VSA
  • MSc or PhD degree in engineering or related disciplines
