Postdoctoral Appointee – Experimental Condensed Matter Physics (412385)
The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral appointee in the area of experimental condensed matter physics or materials science as part of Q-NEXT center.
Q-NEXT is a National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Centers funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) and lead by Argonne National Laboratory. In the extreme characterization thrust of this center, we are focused on merging the frontiers of advanced characterization with the key issues of platforms for quantum information processing, storage, and transduction as well as sensing. In this position, we are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to study dynamical processes associated with quantum information processing and sensing, including nonequilibrium structural, electronic, and magnetic properties.
The candidate will lead the scientific discoveries centering around quantum materials applicable in QIS. The candidate is responsible for developing novel laser-based unique ultrafast techniques such as intense terahertz (THz) field control, THz probe microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy for QIS science. The candidate will also utilize the existing advanced characterization tools such as ultrafast x-ray diffraction at synchrotrons and free-electron lasers, and the candidate will be working closely with a large team of QIS, materials, and device experts from national laboratories, universities, and industry.
Ph.D. in physics, materials science, or related field obtained within the last three years
Considerable: A strong background in condensed matter physics and materials science is required. Any prior research experience in quantum information or sensing is preferred. Considerable experience in experimental research of materials physics systems using advanced spectroscopy or microscopy techniques is advantageous. Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed.
Good: Experience in the development of ultrafast microscopy / spectroscopy experimental platforms for quantum material research. The ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable: Experience with techniques for optical microscopy / spectroscopy. Experience with lattice defect semiconductor systems for quantum information science. Experience with developing and carrying out synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments is a plus but not necessary.
