Manager Engineering Project and Technology

Manage the development and application of new technologies to improve safety, compliance with environmental regulations and/or productivity. Identify and develop business opportunities for new and current products and/or strategic alliances to strengthen business position. Develop and manage implementation of capital investments at Western Zirconium.

Your Day to Day:

  • Implement the standards contained in the Westinghouse "Codes of Business Ethics & Conduct and Defense Industry Initiatives". Insure that all employees reporting to this position are informed about the standards and related policies, and enforce them within this supervised activity.
  • Manage engineers and drafters responsible for development, design and implementation of manufacturing technologies, including all aspects of hiring, training, career development and performance management.
  • Oversee engineering performance, direct continual review of department’s operations, develop/introduce alternative approaches, methods or equipment to effectively accomplish objectives.
  • Manage the on site commercial/sales representative, including oversight of Request for Quote process, quote development and recommending commercial strategy to retain or obtain business.
  • Identify, develop and apply technologies that ensure plant compliance with state and federal environmental regulations while minimizing cost impact to the business.
  • Identify, develop and apply new technologies for application that enhance safety, improve quality and reduce cost.
  • Identify and develop business opportunities that provide growth or reduce overall cost. These may take the form of increased sales of existing products, sales of co-produced chemical products, development and sale of new products or developing alliances with customers, suppliers or competitors in the zirconium business.
  • Establish, monitor and meet financial commitments.
  • Develop and manage implementation of the Capital Investment plan for the plant, which includes recommending spending priorities consistent with overall business plan that optimizes depreciation spending over the life of the plan.
  • Develop and manage Manufacturing Development Funding plan for the plant consistent with Nuclear Fuel Technology Plan and overall business plan.
  • Participate in developing and implementing long-term (5+ years) business plans and manufacturing strategies.

Required to be successful in the role:

  • BS in Engineering discipline required. MBA preferred with consideration given to equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum five (5) years management experience and ten (10) years experience in technology development
  • Must understand the zirconium market conditions and drivers in terms of current participant strategies and emerging global competitors. Must have knowledge of business strategies and be able to determine current applications in the zirconium market by customers and competitors. Knowledge of current technology, best practices and emerging technologies as they apply to both chemical and mechanical manufacturing. Knowledge and experience in business improvement tools such as Lean Enterprise and Six-Sigma are required. Broad knowledge of engineering principles, techniques and applications in area of specialization.
  • Gaining alignment of plant management team and external upper management team to supply financial and human resources for the development of technology at WZ. Must be able to convey a compelling case for the feasibility of the technology, consistency with business strategy and probability of success both technically and financially. Much of this effort is centered on convincing those who may not have an in depth understanding of zirconium manufacturing or the technology being proposed. This requires the incumbent to utilize all available resources to transform complex technical issues into a readily understandable business case.
  • Selecting and recommending the optimum solution requires researching the various options to a level where a decision can be made. Business drivers such as development costs and regulatory requirements do not permit full detailed research of every option. Available data, knowledge and experience must be used to eliminate options and provide focus on only the most viable.
  • The incumbent is responsible for the career development and performance management of approximately 10 – 15 employees. Some direct teaching of skills is required. Explaining business direction and the role of the individual in the business is required to ensure that all employees are engaged in the success of the business.

  • The incumbent must be able to convince local and upper management that their recommendations for the application of human and financial resources provide the Nuclear Fuel business with sufficient opportunity to warrant the investment. This requires the ability to build a business case and communicate complex technical issues to those who may not have an in depth understanding of zirconium technology.

  • The incumbent must be able to communicate and negotiate with current and potential customers and/or business partners in a manner that assures that the outcome of business initiatives serves the needs of Western Zirconium, Nuclear Fuel and Westinghouse Electric Co. LLC.

  • The incumbent must be able to convince local and upper management that the proposed business initiative(s) represent the best possible outcome for the company.
