HJF is seeking a Research Optometrist to support the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program (WRESP) located at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital in Ft. Belvoir, VA. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to WRESP. U.S. citizenship is required for this position.

The incumbent will provide pre-surgical evaluation and work up and post-surgery co-management of refractive surgery patients enrolled in WRESP-RC surgery programs. Will exercise technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of examinations that contribute to project strategies. Prepare scientific reports and manuscripts in collaboration with other study team members.

  1. Assists with planning and modification of research procedures and tests. Performs pre-surgery screening exams.
  2. Composes, proofreads, and edits material for publication and presentation.
  3. Identifies patients for specific study or other WRESP-RC programs. Meets and maintains liaison with external study groups.
  4. Oversee data collection - Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data. Reports on status of research activities. Reviews scientific reports, assists in checking the accuracy of data and data entry.
  5. Performs post-surgery evaluation of refractive surgery patients.
  6. Conducts internet and library searches, summarizes research studies.
  7. Attend meetings in reference to research. Assists in development of technical staff.
  8. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • At least 2 years co-management experience of optometry, refractive surgery and corneal patients.
  • Interest or some experience in managing complex contact lens patients; experience in clinical research a plus.
  • Ability to make effective presentations and publish. Ability to communicate effectively. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Knowledge of medical science and research

Minimum Education: Doctor of Optometry required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum 2-5 years of experience required.

Work Environment: This job takes place in a typical clinic setting.

Work Arrangement: This position is 100% on site.

Background/Security: U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III investigation/Secret Clearance and Common Access Card (CAC).
