Purpose of Job:

  • Works to underwrite rudimentary cases where general underwriting principles will be applied and familiarity with the rating tools will be adopted
  • Assist in negotiation of financial arrangements
  • Develop and maintain relationships with account management and other internal / external customers
  • Maintain up -to - date knowledge of applicable health plans and related products

Primary Responsibilities:

  • May retain some work responsibilities of an Underwriting Analyst
    • May perform manual rate calculations and use PC skills and other tools to increase efficiency and accuracy
    • Perform customer reporting and update / maintain internal tracking databases
    • Monitor / coordinate and ensure accuracy of eligibility, banking and billing information
    • Provide maintenance and support of internal infrastructure such as migration table maintenance, change requests, etc.
  • Works to underwrite rudimentary cases where general underwriting principles will be applied and familiarity with the rating tools will be adopted. Cases will be reviewed with team leads and/or mentors to foster development
  • General communications will be primarily with internal sales. Communications to external customers will be performed by a team lead or mentor, or in conjunction with a team lead or mentor
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Underwriters, AMT members and multi-site coordinators
  • Maintains up - to - date knowledge of internal operations and products
  • Identifies needs and makes recommendations for new/improved underwriting processes and procedures
  • Support and / or lead small underwriting projects as assigned

Job Career Path:
The Senior Underwriting Analyst position can be a permanent career position for those that enjoy the work. For those that have requested and were approved for advancement further into the underwriting career path, they will receive additional on the job training and an increase in responsibilities to adequately prepare the individual for a successful transition to the next job grade and related expectations. The career path would require that the person participates at this level for minimally 1 to 3 years to acquire the fundamentals prior to promotion to the next grade level. Advancement opportunities outside of these guidelines are exceptions but can be approved if evaluated and approved by UW management. If the individual or team lead/mentor deems that the underwriting career path is not optimal, the person has the ability to retain the position as a Senior Underwriting Analyst, assuming performance and expectations in that position can be met.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree
  • 1+ years professional business experience, preferably in Managed Care, Accounting or Finance
  • 1+ years underwriting experience; minimally, 6 months if candidate was an Underwriting Analyst from within the company
  • Solid financial analysis, problem solving and critical decision making skills
  • Knowledge of the importance of effective and timely. communication
  • High level of commitment to customer/client service. Anticipates, understands and strives to meet customer/client needs. Seeks feedback from customers
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information and confidences appropriately and diplomatically.
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel and Word
