Responsibilities

Under
the direct supervision of the Charge Nurse within the Operating Room, the
Surgical Tech completes surgical set-ups according to department standards. The
Surgical Tech ensures and is responsible for the care of the patient in the
surgical suite, and is responsible for the surgical instrumentation and the
preparation of supplies and equipment used, as well as other related duties.
Duties include anticipating patient needs at the sterile field, related to
preparing for all supplies, instruments and equipment. The Surgical Tech is
responsible for implementing knowledge of aseptic technique, practices related
to prevention of retained foreign objects, safe medication labeling and
handling, anticipatory skills related to the sequence of the procedure, and safe
specimen handling. Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the use,
    function and operation of all operating room equipment
  • Working knowledge of aseptic
    technique
  • Working knowledge of surgical
    procedures including anatomy and correct terminology
  • Ability to provide information,
    explain policies and procedures to team members
  • Ability to set priorities,
    recognize emergency situations and take the appropriate action under the direction
    of the nurse in charge
  • Work independently and follow
    through on all assignments.
  • Ability to move objects, such
    as heavy carts and handle surgical equipment safely
  • Ability to take emergency call
    whenever assigned
  • Ability to speak, write and
    read English
  • Must have at least 2 years'
    experience and ability to independently scrub on multiple surgical services
  • Cardiac experience desired
