The Patient Care Technician position on the Nursing Isolation unit at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides patient care services as assigned by a registered nurse, and directly impacts patient comfort and outcome of care.
Ideal candidate must have a high school diploma and either one year of recent experience in an acute care setting as a Nursing Assistant or a CNA certification.
The schedule will be two 12 hour shifts and two 8 hour shifts each week. The shifts will be 7am-7pm, 7am-3pm, and 3pm-11pm, with rotating weekends and holidays required.
The Nursing Isolation Unit cares for a mix of medical, surgical, hematological and ICU patients that have a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. The patient population is mostly adults ages 18 and older. Our nurses have the opportunity to learn a variety of disease processes and manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care. Our organization's guiding principles during this time has been to protect our patients, ensure the health of our workforce, and reduce the impact of the pandemic on our community. Quality and patient outcomes are at the heart of our practice, and the team actively participates in evidence based practice, grounding breaking care and research.
Our safety protocols focus on multiple lines of defense to protect our patients and employees, including testing, vaccination, personal protective equipment (PPE) and managing the number of people on our campuses. The single point of entry allows for better controls and awareness for all staff. In addition, the isolation unit is supported by a separate air handling system and all rooms are designated as negative pressure rooms, which makes the unit ideal to serve suspected and confirmed cases. The team continues to use video and iPad communication when appropriate to minimize entering patient rooms.
Essential Job Functions:
Acts as member of a multidisciplinary team that identifies and addresses patient care needs. Assists in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, admit/discharge and obtaining vital signs. Updates and retrieves patient information. Ensures patient environment is maintained in a clean, safe and orderly manner. Acts as part of an assigned care team.
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Required: No experience required.
Preferred: Experience in an acute care setting as a Nursing Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
