The Role at a Glance:

As an Individual Life Associate Underwriter, you will have the responsibility to underwrite life applications after successful completion of an 8-week training program. During the training period, you will learn the basics of risk selection covering medical, financial, and non-medical underwriting topics while gaining an understanding of Lincoln Life products. You will develop an understanding of Lincoln’s Automated Underwriting Platform. You will develop relationships with agents.

Lincoln’s Life Underwriting Academy provides a comprehensive learning and educational emersion curriculum designed to provide new Associate Underwriters with training focused on acquiring knowledge of the fundamentals of life insurance principles, risk selection and other aspects of the business. This program includes medical, financial, and non-medical underwriting topics.

During this virtual program, our Associate Underwriters participate in approximately 8-weeks of training and 4-weeks of supplemental training to reinforce business specific process --- gain the necessary knowledge and skills that will help transition into a new career as an underwriter, including but not limited to:
•technical and non-technical skills for anti-selection, products, legal fundamentals and regulations pertaining to underwriting
•mentoring and guidance from a team of experienced colleagues including Sr. Underwriting Directors and the Medical, Training and Audit teams
•ability to leverage industry tools, resources and exams including Academy of Life Underwriting (ALU), Life Office Management Association (LOMA), Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®)
•effective communication and relationship-building skills

What you'll be doing:
  • Evaluates and underwrites life insurance applications making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within your designated approval limit up to $500,000 for ages 0 to 70.
  • Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background,
  • Collaborates effectively with stakeholders to gather information necessary for decision making and to select profitable risks
  • Demonstrates dependability, accountability, and sound judgment by adhering to schedules and meeting all productivity, quality, and performance standards
  • Effectively communicates medical and financial information in a clear and concise manner to ensure that the customer understands the information
  • Acquires knowledge on the basic fundamentals of life insurance principles including anti-selection, over-insurance, products, legal fundamentals, and state and federal regulations pertinent to underwriting
  • Performs and delivers on routine assignments and projects for Life Solutions Underwriting and New Business
  • Supports and promotes change management and departmental and enterprise initiatives within Underwriting and New Business
  • Successfully complete regulatory and job training requirements
