ROLE SUMMARY

The candidate will be an experienced lab-based research scientist with in-depth knowledge of virology and antiviral drug discovery/development, disease mechanisms, and host immune responses. The candidate will have specific experience in SARS-CoV-2 virus culture and assays. A proven track record of peer reviewed publications and experience in verbal presentation are essential. In addition to high technical competence, the incumbent understands and will articulate program objectives, experimental results, propose working hypothesis, and provide technical guidance for future assignments to address a problem or evaluate a process/procedure. The candidate will work in proximity with project teams, supporting lines and team members to drive experimental design and logistics, demonstrating leadership skills. An ability to collaborate within cross-functional and across multidisciplinary teams is essential. The candidate will be expected to share and present research results in program meetings and to author appropriate documents (reports, standard operation procedures, regulatory documents and publications).

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work independently in a team to propose, plan and execute experiments, trouble-shoot, analyze, document results, and to ensure high data quality.
  • Establish and/or optimize assays, and carry out experiments to test antiviral activity, mechanism of action, as well as virus drug resistance and virus fitness characterization.
  • Work in BSL2 and BSL3 labs on antiviral assays required
  • Work as a team member in proposing working hypothesis, identify and validate novel drug targets, develop and validate a variety of cell-based and functional assays, and be actively involved in data interpretation.
  • Present results in internal meetings, scientific conferences, and author study reports and publications.
  • Being up-to-date and understanding relevant work published by the scientific community and using the information to improve internal processes and/or establish new procedures/technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must-Have
  • PhD in Virology, Molecular biology, Immunology or a related field with >5 years of experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment, or relevant academic experiences in small molecule drug discovery and R&D using state-of-the-art technologies.
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Proven delivery of objectives in a complex matrix environment.
  • Skills in cell and virus culture, recombinant technology, ELISA, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, luciferase assay, qPCR, imaging-based assays are a must.
  • Generate and deliver robust data packages under tight timelines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to write protocols, reports and publications in peer-reviewed journals required.
  • Design new approaches to improve existing technologies and providing proposals to solve challenging tasks.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, DNA sequence analysis software, and statistical software including GraphPad Prism is essential.
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience in preclinical in vivo antiviral pharmacology animal studies
  • Viral pathogenesis and immunology experience
  • Virology experience in SARS-CoV-2 or other coronaviruses, as well as RNA viruses such as influenza or RSV
  • Prior experience in antiviral drug resistance
  • Expertise with drug combination studies

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to perform large number of assays in 96- and 384-well plates and compile the data appropriately
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis of experiments
  • Ability to search and interpret the scientific literature and translate it to the own required experiments
  • Ability to sit for a longer time at a Biosafety cabinet.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • The current location for the candidate will be in Pearl River NY. The ability to travel to internal and external collaboration partners is required. Dependent on milestones, experiments, availability of equipment, such as robots, work on bank holidays and weekends might be necessary on occasion.
  • Occasionally travel to other Pfizer sites, selected vendors and national/international conferences.
