The position of Forensic Evidence Technician is within our Forensic Toxicology Lab located at the Redwood Toxicology Laboratory in Santa Rosa, CA. This role will be responsible for managing the receipt and audit of biological and non-biological evidence in the Forensic Lab. The accurate maintenance of chain of custody for legal purpose is of utmost importance in this position. The position works closely with the laboratory’s technical and administrative staff. Primary duties include conducting an initial review of each request for laboratory examination and inspect each evidence container from user agencies. Receiving, storing, transferring and returning evidence from user agencies, as well as maintaining the physical security of the evidence. Duties include initiating/maintaining the chain of custody for evidence using a computerized database, maintaining security of the evidence, evidence collection, and submission and return procedures. Will be required to wear Department-approved clothing.
Receive and log in evidence for processing in a production laboratory.
Enter data from requisition forms and specimen bottles into the Laboratory database using a computer keyboard and/or bar code scanner.
Organize short and long term evidence storage areas, return evidence when requested and destroy evidence at prescribed times.
Perform inventory and order laboratory supplies as authorized.
In charge of all evidence management in the forensic lab.
Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word is desired.
Transcribe test requests into Excel Spreadsheets
Documentation of all evidence movement is required both by computer and by handwritten notation.
Ability to follow universal safety precautions when handling bio-hazards such as blood.
May have to testify in court regarding how a specific item of evidence was received and handled.
Courier duties; pick up and receipt of evidence from clients.
Other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION:
High School Diploma, ability to pay close attention to detail and good organizational skills. Be able to always protect identity information at all times.
Prior experience in this type of position is preferred.
Familiarity with computer database and Microsoft excel is desired. Ability to pay attention to detail, a highly organized work style, and high ethical standards.
Teamwork, customer focus, achieving results ethically, clear written and oral communication.
