The Immunology, Cardiovascular, Fibrosis, and Global Health (ICFG) Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS’s internal invention of engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities. We work closely our R&ED colleagues in clinical and non-clinical development, project leadership, translational medicine, and informatics to advance therapies based on a deep understand of causal human biology. Further, we collaborate across the biopharmaceutical ecosystem to establish partnerships that complement our internal expertise.

The Associate Director, Group Leader, CV Pharmacology will build and lead a group of scientists dedicated to the experimental study of pharmacology (in vivo, ex vivo, cellular and molecular) in the cardiovascular field. The position involves management of an established group of skilled scientists at our Brisbane, CA location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, organize and manage a group of talented scientists and biological technicians with expertise in pharmacology, predominantly focused on in vivo and ex vivo pharmacology, but also including cellular work with isolated cardiomyocytes and molecular biology.
  • Ensure smooth interactions and appropriate support levels to facilitate drug discovery progression within the working groups.
  • Ensure appropriate interface with translational research and early development teams to ensure pre-clinical pharmacological testing supports molecule progression into the clinic.
  • Establish and implement a strategy to identify and validate new pharmacological models.
  • Be a leading contributor to the overall drug discovery strategy development within CV Drug Discovery; past drug target leadership is a plus.
  • Support compliance with institutional animal care and use policies.
  • Manage the career progression of all members of the CV Pharmacology team.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the CV Drug Discovery Biology team; policy matters, recruitment, succession planning, diversity.
  • Assess pharmacological suitability of potential business development opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD and 8+ years of experience in academia or industry.
  • Expertise in the field of CV Pharmacology with a strong focus on heart failure and genetic cardiomyopathy; understanding of sarcomere biology, physiology and related drug targets is a plus.
  • Prior drug discovery expertise within an industrial setting is highly desirable.
  • Possess keen understanding of cardiovascular and renal biology/pathophysiology and relevance of key pathways and existing drug therapies.
  • Deep understanding of KO and transgenic model creation.
  • Demonstrated success in interfacing with development teams and team leaders.
  • Demonstrated success in line-managing teams of scientists via direct reporting or dotted line management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to developing one’s own leadership skills via participation in scientific management training.
