Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences (CPSS) is changing the way imaging technologies are combined to offer unprecedented insight and impact. Our imaging hubs combines data from histology, digital pathology, multiplex assays, advanced molecular imaging techniques (including mass spectrometry imaging) and a full suite of in vivo imaging technologies.

As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the investigation of both the safety and efficacy of drugs within our projects in both a preclinical and clinical setting. We believe this is a truly exciting opportunity for a hardworking Image Analysis Scientist.

Position Summary:

The Associate Director role is an analytical and laboratory position responsible for the integration of multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) into our advanced imaging pipeline. Research will run from study and panel design, staining and through to digital quantitative analysis. Role includes but is not limited to Immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), multiplexed IHC/IF, slide digitization and digital quantitative analysis. The Associate Director will lead discussions and planning for the strategic deployment of multiplex IF globally and across all therapy areas. The Associate Director will lead and support assay development, optimization and validation, utilizing multiplex immunohistochemical (IHC) techniques to support across all therapy areas. The Associate Director will work closely with pathologists and team members to provide the highest quality assay performance in support of experimental research and clinical (GCP) projects. Successful candidate will play role in the continued development of complex imaging endpoints to support all stages of our pipeline and will work closely with our teams delivering diverse and cutting edge imaging technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads discussions and planning for the strategic deployment of multiplex IF globally and across all therapy areas.

  • Performs multiplex immunofluorescence staining, slide digitization and quantitative image analysis

  • Utilizes supportive software including but not limited to HALO, Visopharm, and R Studio to perform quantitative image analysis.

  • Performs routine and non-routine slide/tissue staining including but not limited to IHC, IF, in situ hybridization and histology procedures

  • Develops, optimizes and validates routine IHC and multiplex IF tissue staining protocols.

  • Communicates results to team members and is involved in the interpretation of data. Assesses and reports data in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of its implications within the overall context of drug discovery

  • May contribute to preparation of manuscripts and/or patent applications. Shares relevant external published papers with peers

  • Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, interprets results, and communicates findings to team members in a clear and concise manner. May be asked to present findings at internal and external meetings.

  • Provides solutions to a variety of problems involving basic scientific principles.

  • Prepares and maintains precise technical summaries, protocols and all appropriate documentation of experiments in laboratory notebooks/electronic laboratory notebooks. Ensures own work, and work of peers, is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health, and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations.

  • Ensures proper management of research, pre-clinical and clinical human tissue following company’s HBS guidelines.

  • Responsible for the correct operation and utilization of lab equipment, and overall state of the shared lab space.

  • Works in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) regulations

  • Adhere to the highest laboratory standards including safety and company Code of Conduct.

  • Prepares documentation and packages for shipment

  • Establish working relationships and credibility with department members and others within, and possibly outside, the company.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required for the role:

  • Must have 1-5 years experience in multiplex Immunofluorescence staining

  • 3-5 years direct experience in immunohistochemistry

  • Experience using automated IHC staining platforms preferred

  • Proficient in use of relevant computer programs (Microsoft Office, Excel and MS Project)

  • Minimum Masters’ degree in the biological sciences, PhD preferred

Desirable for the role:

  • Biopharmaceutical industry, hospital or academic experience

  • Understanding of immunology/pathology

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
