Senior R&D Engineer – Structural Heart

This is an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's fast growing Structural Heart business unit in Menlo Park, CA home of the life-saving MitraClip medical device.

The Senior R&D Engineer for Product Development will be responsible for designing and developing implanted medical devices and delivery systems. This role may involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to 3D CAD model creation and documentation, materials research, product design, prototyping, bench testing, test fixture design, test method development, and interfacing with a cross-functional product development team.


  • Utilize multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop innovative new products in the dynamic structural heart space where Abbott is a leading provider of solutions

  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design

  • Conceive and build working prototypes

  • Utilize structured problem-solving approaches to resolve design investigations during development

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and suppliers

  • Maintain knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.)

  • Identify and mitigate project risks

  • Be a strong team player with demonstrated ability to use critical thinking skills

  • Work closely with product development team to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate project tasks and activities

  • Establish product requirements and specifications

  • Run empirical and experimental analysis utilizing various analytical and statistical tools

  • Develop test methods and conduct model development, as needed

  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies and prints

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other related engineering field

  • 5+ years of engineering experience, primarily in R&D engineering

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modeling tools like SolidWorks

  • Experience designing and testing medical devices

  • Plastics injection molding and/or extrusion experience

  • Experience with GD&T, stack-up analysis, and mechanical testing

  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams as an individual contributor in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering disciplines, theories and concepts, to support development of innovative approaches to problem solving

  • Project management skills
