Senior Stent R&D Engineer – Structural Heart
Plymouth, MN

As a Senior Stent R&D Engineer, you will be part of our Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) research and development team focused on delivering the future in heart valve therapy. This role may involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to metallurgy/materials research and analysis, 3D CAD model creation and documentation, product design, prototyping, bench testing, test fixture design, test method development, and interfacing with a cross-functional product development team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Utilize multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop innovative new products in the dynamic structural heart space where Abbott is a leading provider of solutions
Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design
Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and suppliers
Be a strong team player with demonstrated ability to use critical thinking skills
Work closely with product development team to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility
Plan, schedule and coordinate project tasks and activities
Establish product requirements and specifications
Conceive and build working prototypes
Run empirical and experimental analysis utilizing various analytical and statistical tools
Utilize structured problem-solving approaches to resolve design investigations during development
Develop test methods and conduct model development
Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies and prints
Maintain knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.)
Identify and mitigate project risks
Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other related engineering field
5+ years of engineering experience, primarily in R&D engineering
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
Ability to work within cross-functional teams as an individual contributor in a fast-paced environment
Knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering disciplines, theories and concepts, to support development of innovative approaches to problem solving
Project management skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience utilizing metallurgy techniques to assess and optimize medical implant performance strongly preferred
Experience developing and executing stent/implant fatigue testing preferred
Experience designing stents and/or implantable cardiovascular implants preferred
Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability preferred
