The Role

Are you keen to develop a career in environmental sustainability, helping to ensure the environmental safety of our products and deliver life-changing medicines to patients across the globe?

We have a new, exciting and varied role as an Environmental Risk Assessor within our Global Sustainability function. Your contribution will be pivotal in supporting the development and delivery of Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) and associated environmental toxicity and fate data. You will help with delivery of regulatory ERAs, monitor experimental work as well as help support or manage projects transforming our processes to promote transparency of environmental data across the organisation and externally. The ERAs of our products are both a critical piece of regulatory compliance, as well as being key to our strategy around Product Sustainability. Your work will help deliver our medicines to patients, whilst ensuring we continue to follow the science and effectively manage our environmental footprint.

Tailored training will be given to complement the candidates skills and experiences, and so a keenness to continued learning and development is essential.

Key Responsibilities will include

  • To support the maintenance and delivery of Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) and supporting data for the portfolio of AstraZeneca’s medicinal products.

  • To assist in the development and management of Environmental Risk Management Plans (ERMP) for our active pharmaceutical ingredients, liaising with other corporate functions including Global Product Teams.

  • With training, to support outsourcing activities of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) environmental toxicity and fate studies at contract research organisations (CROs) through supplier management and study monitoring. Activities will include:

    • acting as point of contact between CROs and AZ,

    • reviewing and finalising study protocols and reports

    • ensuring regulatory deadlines are met;

    • management of test material transfer to CROs through interaction with cross-functional teams.

  • To support the project management and delivery of AZ’s environmental strategy (such as EcoPharmacoVigilance process, safe API discharges initiative and environmental data transparency.

  • Support roles could include project management, technical document preparation, liaising with multifunctional teams and external suppliers to ensure environmental safety of our products and operations are maintained.

  • To provide support to AZ SHE functions as required, where ERA may have an impact on their activities. Similarly, to provide support as required to AZ procedures and projects, which require ERA involvement.

  • Provide project management support to internal stakeholders to plan, deliver and continuously improve the company ERA programme in support of delivering AZ’s Global Environmental and Product Sustainability targets

  • In working to deliver goals actively demonstrate, role model, and reinforce AstraZeneca’s values and behaviours.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Science degree or equivalent with strong interest in environmental sustainability and/or environmental risk assessments

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Experience in managing budgets, small projects and/or deliverables to tight timelines

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams

  • Effective English writing and communication skills

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience in environmental fate testing/ or chemistry/ or experimental ecotoxicology/ or regulatory environmental risk assessment

  • Experience in, or a good understanding of, the principles of GLP, possibly having experience as a Study Director and/or Principal Investigator and/or Study monitor

  • Experience in managing multiple stakeholders to deliver project goals

  • Good analytical skills and ability to interpret data

  • Experience or understanding of the science and regulations around pharmaceuticals (or other chemicals) in the environment

  • Certification in environmental risk assessment such a SETAC Certified Risk Assessor (CRA) or International Board of Environmental Risk Assessor (IBERA) diplomate
