We are looking for an experienced Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability Sr. Manager to drive outstanding performance in a diverse manufacturing environment! The primary objectives of this position are to help ensure that the facility, equipment, and procedures are in place to enable a safe start-up of operations. After start-up, this role will be responsible for managing EHS industrial safety & safety programs to ensure safe operations and to help drive an actively caring safety culture.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and leading key health & safety programs and collaborating with business partners to advance the site’s safety culture and performance.

  • Must have a strong background in all health & safety subject areas and be able to support business partners with input from other EHSS professionals at the site and from within the Amgen EHSS community.

  • Develop, implement and manage assigned programs and act as the site subject matter expert

  • Ensure regulatory compliance for all assigned programs and liaise with regulatory authorities as appropriate

  • Implement robust compliance readiness and internal auditing program for each program

  • Provide regular updates to Global Program owners and EHSS Site Lead on the status of each program

  • Implement safety culture program to integrate health & safety as part of day-to-day business operations.

  • Analyze metrics and establish annual action plans to ensure continuous improvement.

  • Establish and implement risk assessment plans to proactively address risks and ensure that control systems are implemented and maintained.

  • Ensure all changes with potential health & safety impact are assessed and controls are established prior to implementation

  • Ensure all hazards are identified and risks are proactively assessed

  • Establish safe work procedures for hazardous work, including conducting work area inspections

  • Monitor incident trends and conduct incident investigations to implement robust corrective actions to prevent future incidents

  • Ability to partner with and effectively influence staff and management

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of EHS principles and standard methodologies, regulatory standards, and requirements in context of business activities.

  • Advanced expertise is required in several of the following fields to serve as program owner and subject matter authority.

  • Safety Management – Implement a management system which ensures that Safety is a key component of site activities. Implement safety and health standards and provide oversight of safety practices. Influence line management to ensure that Safety is managed by line management as a core skill. Implement CAPA program to ensure actions are taken in a timely manner for effective close out of findings from incidents, risk assessments, inspections and audits.

  • Incident management – Implement injury prevention programs. This includes incident investigation and root cause analysis, to identify and address the underlying causes of incidents and reduce injuries.

  • Risk Management – Implement risk assessment program for various aspects of safety at all levels of the facility.

  • Safety culture programs – Drive the Amgen safety culture program to integrate Safety as part of the day-to-day site operations.

  • Safety Programs - Implement Amgen’s Safety programs and ensure Amgen requirements are followed. For example:

  • Engineering safety – Permit to work, lock-out/tag-out, confined space entry, electrical, pressure, working at heights

  • Personal Protective Equipment

  • Managing hazardous substances including flammable and combustible materials

  • Industrial hygiene, biosafety and ergonomics

  • Regulations – Implement systems to ensure compliance with applicable Safety regulations.

  • Change agent - Drive health & safety improvement cross functionally through communication with key collaborators and functional peers.

  • Training – Implement Safety and environmental training strategy for Amgen staff & contractors.

  • Strong communication, presentation skills, program development and project management.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software systems.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience

Or

Master’s degree and 6 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree or and 8 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience

Or

Associate degree and 10 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience

Or

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a GMP manufacturing environment

Experience managing industrial safety programs during new pharmaceutical facility start-up

Experience performing ergonomic risk assessments

Experience managing emergency action plans and emergency response activities
