The Opportunity

This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation (NM) Division. Our Neuromodulation business is an area of expertise for Abbott. This business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. Our Solutions include Proclaim (TM) XR SCS System, the #1 Spinal cord stimulator on the market, Proclaim (TM) DRG Neurostimulator, the only FDA approved DRG therapy and a market leader in radiofrequency ablation therapy, Abbott RFA. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. Our deep brain stimulation technology for progressive diseases help people manage their Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor symptoms, steering away from side effects.

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Staff Mechanical Engineer who will make an important contribution by resolving complex technical issues and determine design direction in new product development. Exercise’s judgment in identifying, recommending, and implementing designs to meet development and regulatory requirements. Works on identifying new technologies for implementation into new product development and/or the identification of process improvement opportunities. Lead technical teams in the accomplishment of mechanical engineering activities. Develops networks involving cross functional groups.

What You’ll Work On

  • Functions as a central mechanical engineering expert within and across business units
  • Provides influence and contributes to engineering excellence in the field of neuromodulation
  • Works with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to solves difficult technical issues with a methodical, data-driven approach
  • Leads engineering team through demonstrated technical excellence and implementation of engineering best practices
  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design
  • Create novel design solutions that expand the business’s intellectual property
  • Ensures that program objectives are determined and met, and logistics are effectively coordinated
  • Exhibits and instills decision-making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)
  • Identifies, communicates, and mitigates project risks
  • Ensures executional compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulations
  • Leads technical reviews and design reviews or acts as an independent reviewer
  • Develops team through mentorship, training, and adoption of development best practices
  • Builds and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally
  • Maintains best in class, expert knowledge in current and novel technologies across the field of active implantable devices
  • Engages teams within Abbott and across the field of active implantable devices to utilize the latest technology and expertise across the business
  • Engages with industry regulators (FDA, BSI, etc.) to explain novel designs or technical analysis in support of device submissions
  • Contributes to external technical committees (ISO, EN, etc.) as a representative of Abbott
  • Position may require up to 15% travel

Pay and Shift [manufacturing only; if applicable]

The salary range for this position is $132,000-154,000 based on experience.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience (preferably with implantable hardware)
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications/Other Experience

  • Masters/PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering/related degree, or equivalent years of experience
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business units model
  • Experience in designing electro-mechanical devices.
  • Project (product development/CAPA/DFSS) leadership and management skills
  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing, etc.)
  • Experience designing for relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. biocompatible material selection, printed circuit board fabrication, machining, injection molding, extrusion, metal forming, welding)
  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Pro-E)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of root cause investigation
  • Experience working on joint technical forums/councils in the development of industry standards
  • Experience applying statistical techniques to inform design decisions (e.g. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability)
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred
  • Experience in the design of Class II and Class III medical devices.
