The Opportunity

This position works out of our Lake Forest, IL location in the Core Diagnostics Division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

The Senior Manager, Packaging Development and Engineering, manages the planning and completion of packaging engineering projects, including the design, development and validation of packaging, product system-level validation, packaging processes, labeling processes, documentation, tooling, and fixtures to enhance productivity and product quality. Apply understanding of engineering principles, people and process management, and the environment to support attainment of business objectives. The position will ensure that products are designed in order to meet unmet market needs, while maintaining the highest level of quality and manufacturability. In addition, provide recommendations, changes, reviews progress, and approves cost estimates or proposals.

What You’ll Work On

  • Provide technical leadership to packaging engineering staff regarding project prioritization, process validations, and continuous improvements.

  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, retaining, training, employee development and performance evaluation of a highly qualified technical staff. Set team goals which align to department plans and manage the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring while ensuring the best possible business decisions are made in consideration of technical risk and divisional strategies.

  • Develop, implement, train and monitor effectiveness of engineering systems and procedures to ensure compliance to FDA, GMP and all other applicable agency regulations.

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

  • Support ongoing production and new product introductions.

  • Monitor and evaluate project and department progress and results.

  • Provide leadership and collaboration in cross-functional teams.

  • Review and approve Quality Plans, Design Change Plans, Master Validations Plans, protocol, and written reports.

  • Drive continuous improvement of packaging engineering technical capabilities.

  • Prepare technical reports, analysis, recommendations and presentations reflecting the status and results of packaging projects in progress on a regular basis.

  • Ensure a safe and professional work environment consistent with OSHA requirements and Abbott Policies.

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Conceptualize strategy, develop plans, and manage execution of project initiatives. Must be a results-oriented “change agent,” proactive, and able to influence, negotiate, and/or resolve conflicts to drive toward goals.

  • Provide leadership, coaching and feedback to packaging engineering staff regarding project prioritization, technical challenges, and package qualification activities.

  • Responsible for Packaging Lab including but not limited to preparing departmental budget, controlling expenditures to stay within spending limits, and developing/executing plan to elevate capabilities of lab (equipment and people) to meet needs of development of Core Diagnostics Commodities and Product Packaging.

  • Provide support to Abbott’s global package sustainability goals.

  • Keep abreast of industry best practices, regulatory updates, and technology innovations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree Engineering; OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum 12 year’s experience. 5+ years of experience leading a project team.

  • Progressively responsible work experience in a high-volume, multi-product manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferably Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree - focused on Packaging, Mechanical, or Manufacturing.

  • Preferably experience in the medical device industry.

  • Significant experience leading and implementing lean manufacturing / Six Sigma Initiatives.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Multi-tasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in timely manner.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills and ability to hold others accountable.

  • Proven success in motivating, directing, and providing technical knowledge and mentoring to technical support staff. Ability to hold team accountable for delivering project and organizational goals.

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate complex processes, develop, and propose risk-based options to resolve issues and implement solutions.

  • Thorough technical knowledge of a wide range of packaging materials, structures, manufacturing processes, and quality standards.

  • Demonstrated experience making appropriate technical recommendations and decisions based on data.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions independently.

  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, analytical skills, and effective problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Results-oriented “change agent”, proactive, and able to influence, negotiate, and/or resolve conflicts to drive toward goals.

  • Subject matter expert of ISO 11607 part I & part II.

  • Excellent working knowledge of writing protocols, preparing testing samples, testing samples, and making strong conclusions.

  • Excellent firsthand working knowledge medical device package testing as well as proficient working knowledge of ASTM standards associated with medical device package testing.

  • Proficient in reading and creating engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and schematics.

  • Proficient and extensive working knowledge of packaging equipment for all related processes, packaging material and supplier processes.

  • Proficient and extensive working knowledge of lean manufacturing philosophies.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/ cross division business unit model preferred.

  • Effectively work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.

  • Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise in medical device instrumentation, including electronics experience and hardware / software development.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10-25%, including internationally.
