We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.

The Immunology, Cardiovascular, Fibrosis and Global Health (ICFG) Thematic Research Center (TRC) at BMS is one of the fundamental Research and Early Development (R&ED) units delivering therapeutics to patients. Our mission is to create transformative medicines of tomorrow based on the cutting-edge science of today. We leverage BMS’s internal innovation engine that includes industry-leading expertise in small molecule chemistry, protein biotherapeutics, cell therapy, protein degradation, nucleic acids, and other therapeutic modalities. We work closely with our R&ED colleagues in clinical and non-clinical development, project leadership, translational medicine, and informatics to advance therapies based on a deep understanding of causal human biology. Furthermore, we collaborate across the biopharmaceutical ecosystem to establish partnerships that complement our internal expertise.

Position Summary

Located at the Alewife site in Cambridge, MA, Bristol Myers Squibb is seeking a skilled and motivated scientist with experience in various aspects of immunology, molecular biology, and drug discovery. This person will focus on drug discovery within the area of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, which includes (but is not necessarily limited to) target identification, target validation, elucidating drug mechanism of action, molecular basis of disease, and assessment/development of novel modalities for use in drug discovery. The desired candidate will be well-versed in various molecular biology, cellular, and immunological techniques in the laboratory, but also have an insatiable curiosity to lead them towards continually expanding their scientific repertoire. This individual will demonstrate sophisticated scientific thinking and have the capacity and eagerness to rise to challenges. A strong work ethic, good judgement, and the ability to work equally well in a team or independently are key qualities for the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop therapeutic hypotheses for autoimmune disease(s) based on literature discoveries, in vitro experimental data, in vivo animal modeling, genetics, clinical and translational data, and technological advances.
  • Learn, develop, trouble-shoot and execute cell line-based and/or primary cell-based experiments (mouse, monkey and human), such as in vitro and ex vivo stimulation and differentiation assays, plate-based assays (ELISA, MSD, Luminex, etc.), cytokine analyses, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation, western blots, qPCR, genetic manipulations, etc. to drive early discovery efforts. This position is primarily lab-based.
  • Design sophisticated cross-disciplinary experiments within project teams to enable the progression of therapeutic candidates through the drug discovery pipeline.
  • Collaborate alongside a cross-functional team that includes immunologists, chemists, computational chemists, biochemists, in vivo biologists and proteomics experts to discover new targets, derive new mechanistic insights, and support programs as they move through development.
  • Excellent communication, record keeping, presentation, collaboration and organizational skills are required.
  • Travel will be less than 5% of the time.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A Ph.D. degree in the field of biology, immunology, or related scientific discipline with ideally 1-2 years of post-graduate training or industry experience.
  • Research experience in inflammatory & autoimmune diseases, molecular immunology, infectious diseases, neuroimmunology and/or cancer immunotherapy is highly desirable.
  • A clear track record of scientific accomplishments.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in tissue culture handling of cell lines and/or isolation, culture, and characterization of primary immune cells from human or animal tissues is required. Expertise in innate immune cell and/or T cell biology and differentiation, as well as flow cytometry, is a plus.
  • Sophisticated understanding of experimental design and the ability to identify scientific problems as well as potential solutions.
  • Evidence of sustained independent thinking as well as creativity in developing novel scientific ideas and technologies.
  • Ability to understand and interpret large multi-dimensional (e.g. multi-OMICs) datasets is a plus.
