Division Summary

Walmart Global Tech is the technical powerhouse behind Walmart Global eCommerce. We employ big data at scale -- from machine learning, data mining and optimization algorithms, to modeling and analyzing massive flows of data from online, social, mobile, and offline commerce. We don't just engineer cool websites, mobile apps, and new services; we use our own open-source tools to create the framework. Deployment is automated and accelerated through our open cloud platform. This makes us incredibly nimble and able to adjust in real-time to our global customers.

Position Summary

Our Containers team is part of the Global Technology Platform organization, delivering the Walmart Cloud Native Platform (WCNP) based on Kubernetes clusters. We are creating a seamless containerized app hosting experience for our app developers in multiple Public Cloud providers and Private Data Centers, as well as running the Edge program in Stores, Distribution Centers/Fulfillment Centers running WCNP on-prem. We use Kubernetes as the foundation of WCNP and build & develop Walmart ecosystem integrations on top.

The recently formed Customer Engagement team is the face of the WCNP group. We interact directly with developers, product managers and support teams, many times as the initial point of contact to the WCNP group. We are engineers serving in the capacity of consultants to help drive Walmart technology forward. Our team is growing, and with growth comes opportunity.

Job Responsibilities

  • Solve highly scalable, reliable and performance challenges in cloud platforms.
  • Review code for testability and readability.
  • Assist in improving systems and removing unnecessary complexity.
  • Develop and support Walmart's massive Kubernetes platform across public, private and edge computing environments.
  • Assist in building and improving our Kubernetes multi-cluster deployment product.
  • Troubleshoot business and production issues by reviewing and analyzing information (for example, issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause); engaging support teams to assist in the resolution of issues; formulating an action plan; directing actions as designated in the plan; interpreting the results to determine further action; performing root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues; and completing online documentation.
  • Consult in the discovery phase of medium to large projects to come up with high level design by partnering with the product management, Web Operations, project management, business and user experience teams.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related field OR 5 years' experience in software engineering or related field
  • Good programming language proficiency.
  • Working knowledge in container and cloud native technologies - Kubernetes, Docker, other.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Java programming experience.
  • Experience developing or working with Cloud technologies such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or OpenStack.
  • Experience developing or working with CI/CD or GitOps systems.
  • Infrastructure provision and management knowledge at scale for public & private cloud (Azure, GCP, VMware, Nutanix, Openstack).
  • Exposure to security compliance and management of K8S security component (RBAC, OPA, Vault, etc).
  • Experience building a Kubernetes operator.
  • • Knowledge of open-source tools like Istio, Prometheus, Fluent Bit.
  • • Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-a-Code technologies like Ansible, Terraform, etc.

Leads and participates in medium- to large-scale projects by reviewing project requirements; translating requirements into technical solutions; gathering requested information (for example, design documents, product requirements, wire frames); writing and developing code; conducting unit testing; communicating status and issues to team members and stakeholders; collaborating with project team and cross functional teams; troubleshooting open issues and bug-fixes; ensuring on-time delivery and hand-offs; interacting with project manager to provide input on project plan; and providing leadership to the project team.

Leads the work of other small groups of four to six engineers, including offshore associates, for assigned Engineering projects by proving pertinent documents, direction, and examples; identifying short and long term solutions and timeline; reviewing and providing feedback for proposed solutions; and performing design and code reviews of changes.

Troubleshoots business and production issues by gathering information (for example, issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause); engaging support teams to assist in the resolution of issues; formulating an action plan; performing actions as designated in the plan; interpreting the results to determine further action; performs root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues; and completing online documentation.

Provides support to the business by responding to user's questions, concerns, and issues (for example, technical feasibility, implementation strategies); identifying short- and long-term solutions; facilitating resolutions; and leading cross-functional partnership.

Leads the discovery phase of medium to large projects to come up with high level design by partnering with the product management, project management, business and user experience teams; and obtaining cross-function approvals.

Demonstrates up-to-date expertise and applies this to the development, execution, and improvement of action plans by providing expert advice and guidance to others in the application of information and best practices; supporting and aligning efforts to meet customer and business needs; and building commitment for perspectives and rationales.
