We are looking for an experienced Environmental Protection Specialist to join our team at Potrero Hills Landfill in Suisun City, CA!

This position is responsible for implementing Environmental Protection programs and assisting with technical and environmental duties for assigned districts. This position is also responsible for providing direction, guidance and support in the following areas; ground water monitoring, landfill gas extraction system operations, methane surface emissions and probe monitoring, storm water monitoring, load check program, and leachate discharge monitoring. This includes all aspects of permit compliance and reporting combined with fieldwork with operations on environmental related projects. Included are completion of all tasks and database system updates and maintenance.

Essential Duties

  • Performs on-site inspections and reporting for load checking/HHW program, facility inspections, compliance, annual hazardous waste generation, and all other regulatory required inspections and reporting.

  • Ability to review lab data to ensure parameters are within regulatory/permit limits.

  • Reviews technical data relating to ground water, leachate, storm water and gas sampling, to ensure the parameters are within regulatory limits.

  • Responsible for keeping up to date with environmental regulations and laws applicable to the landfill operations.

  • Update and maintain site-operating record in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Correspond with regulatory agencies as directed by District Manager and/or Region Engineer.

  • Works in the field overseeing and guiding environmental projects such as gas system updates and well installation, and storm water updates.

  • Operates and adjusts flare to maintain vacuum on the field.

  • Assists and coordinates sampling events for ground water, storm water, landfill gas and air sampling including annual source testing.

  • Conscientiously operates and maintains necessary scientific equipment in a manner that promotes longevity and maximizes value.

  • Responds to emergency environmental issues providing both direction and support.

  • Communicates and implements company environmental programs and policies and serves as the environmental contact regarding incident notifications, environmental issues, inspection notifications and permit applications.

  • Plans, organizes and secures regulatory approvals as required and supports all environmental permitting processes.

  • Prepares, reviews and submits required environmental reports for internal and external audiences as required, maintains environmental tracking database and provides related company reporting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrate a strong power of analytical thinking/reasoning to solve problems and adjust work procedures for maximum efficiency.

  • Ability to track capital projects and ensure compliance with requirement both environmental and financial while looking for ways to ensure cost savings.

  • Knowledge of local state and federal environmental laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge of CalRecycle and Local Enforcement inspection procedures.

  • Basic knowledge of environmental sample collection with ability to analyze sample results.

  • Ability to work and function effectively in an environment that is dependent upon teamwork.

  • Ability to speak and present information in a professional manner to internal staff and external regulatory agencies and customers.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires adapting to change and responding to changing goals, priorities and needs of the company.

  • Can perform and produce professional work dealing with people, data and technology that relates to administrative, technical, engineering, accounting, legal or managerial skills.

  • Ability to maintain records and write complete and concise reports.

  • Ability to use a PC to maintain records, communicate effectively via e-mail, and prepare reports and access to required forms.

  • Other duties as assigned.
